Madhra claims GMC orchestrated conspiracy against him

Under-fire urologist applies for case against him to be dismissed Last week the Medical Practitioners' Tribunal Service hearing which is considering banning Kavinder Madhra from ever working again as a doctor was adjourned. Again.  Before the hearing was adjourned the panel heard an application from the doctor for the GMC's case against him to be rejected. Documents seen by The Mail state: "Mr Madhra submitted that the assessors did not use all the instruments of assessment as mandated by the GMC. "Mr Madhra submitted that multiple errors occurred during the preparation of the assessment report. "Mr Madhra submitted the assessors had not been able to cite a single case where ‘actual harm’ had happened to any of his patients due to his actions but that the assessment report was full of speculation, citing the possibility of imaginary potential harms and pure scaremongering. "Mr Madhra submitted that if any conditions were put on his regist...

Under-fire urologists supporting each other

Urologist's support for ex colleague who is at risk of being struck off As Kavinder Madhra's Medical Practitioners' Tribunal Service hearing continues, following concerns being raised by the General Medical Council, one of his former colleagues has submitted a character reference.  Last month the panel heard Mr Jain, who is also being investigated, has submitted a character reference in support of his former colleague’s bid to continue working as a doctor. Panel chair Julian Weinberg described the reference as ‘complimentary’. Read the full story here

One of the 'Urology Three' finally faces being struck off

It only took the authorities 19 years... In 2001 Kavinder Madhra started at the University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust. Within 12 months he had been issued a warning from the General Medical Council. It was blatantly obvious to his colleagues - four of whom have confirmed their opinion - that he was a 'rogue consultant' - someone who was putting patients at risk. He was sent off to Scotland - at the taxpayer's expense - to 'retrain' (while still being paid his salary) and returned to Cumbria a number of years later. He continued to make mistakes. Right up until September 2018 when the GMC/MPTS finally imposed restrictions on him (although you may question why the trust hadn't done something sooner). One former nurse told me how in theatre Mr Madhra would 'sprinkle' powder penicillin over a wound after performing surgery. I'll allow those who are medically trained to make up their own mind about such a practice. ...

Patient 'was harmed by urology head of department'

Family calls for action against FGH urology consultant An incident involving a man with a single kidney who had to be taken to intensive care in 2016 because of errors allegedly made by Muhammad Naseem has come to light following an FOI request I made. The response reveals UHMBT didn't carry out a Root Cause Analysis after the patient was not immediately taken to theatre despite having an infected, obstructed kidney.  Fortunately Peter Duffy became aware of the case and operated on the man as an emergency.   The case shows worrying similarities with the circumstances surrounding the deaths of Irene Erhart in 2011 and Peter Read in 2015.  Peter Read's family said: “We continue to demand that action is taken against both these consultants. We’re aware Mr Jain has returned to surgery and understand he is being supervised by a doctor junior to himself. When will something be done? “It is utterly disgraceful that more than a year after ...

PETER DUFFY LOOK BACK ON THE LAST 12 MONTHS

Whistle-blower gives interview to one of my colleagues Peter Duffy gave an interview to my colleague Tommy Greene in which he looked back at the events of the last year. He said: “I think it’s shameful that the NHS just fought me all the way through this, trying to silence me and gag me and threaten me. “Even in the course of the employment tribunal the true facts didn’t come out. “Under the current system, the tribunal is not so much interested in the whistleblowing - it’s interested in destroying the character of the whistleblower. “So, had it not been for the book and for Amy Fenton’s work, obviously, all of this would’ve been buried and concealed forever. “At least there has been a belated realisation that these are serious issues. “And I think it is good the NHS hasn’t managed to cover this one up. It’s out there now.” Read the full interview here

UNDER-FIRE CONSULTANT SAYS WHISTLE-BLOWER USED PIZZA TO INFLUENCE HIM

Ash Jain reports whistle-blower to GMC for 'trying to bribe him with pizzas' In December 2019 Mr Duffy was told Mr Jain had made a complaint about him to the General Medical Council (GMC). The complaint alleges '(Peter) did not allow Asian colleagues to take annual leave and his wife used to decide who gets what... at a pizza party'. He is also accused of being a user of crack cocaine and amphetamine. READ THE FULL STORY HERE

EXCLUSIVE: Peter speaks to UHMBT governors

Peter Duffy's heartfelt speech to UHMBT's council of governors On Tuesday December 10th Peter Duffy attended the University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust's council of governors meeting. This was the first time Peter had addressed an official trust meeting since the publication of his book and the ensuing coverage through my investigation. You can listen to Peter's speech in the video below.

EXPERTS DISPUTE TRUST'S TESTICLE LOSS REPORT

Investigation was done by one of the other under-fire urologists After Walney dad Bill Murray complained when he lost a testicle following a routine procedure carried out by Ashutosh Jain (above) the University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust carried out a Root Cause Analysis. An RCA aims to identify any failings and lessons to be learned. The trust redacted (blacked out) the names of the urologists and other clinicians/trust staff involved in the RCA but I managed to obtain the names. Incredibly, I discovered that the lead author of the report was Muhammad Naseem (below) - one of the other urologists responsible for clinical errors within the urology department over the last 18 years. Understandably, Bill wasn't happy, and so I contacted five consultant urologists from across the UK. I sent them a copy of the RCA and images taken during the second operation to remove Bill's testicle. Remarkably all five immediately flagged up one particul...

HEARTBREAKING

VIDEO: Peter describes the impact of his colleagues' behaviour This audio clip was recorded in 2016 when UHMBT bosses Ameeta Joshi (clinical director) and David Walker (medical director) falsely accused Peter Duffy of upsetting two patients whose lives Peter saved. Peter raised concerns after colleague Ash Jain failed to insert stents in two patients who only had one kidney after carrying out a procedure. Both patients subsequently went into kidney failure as a result of Mr Jain's mistakes. If it wasn't for Peter's actions both patients could have died. In this video Peter describes the impact of the bullying he faced from three of his colleagues because he reported clinical errors they made.

UROLOGY VICTIM WAIVES ANONYMITY

Brave Bill Murray reveals his horror testicle loss story Bill Murray underwent a routine procedure at Furness General Hospital in April 2019 when fluid collected around one of his testicles. The procedure, known as a hydrocele repair, typically takes around 30 minutes and rarely results in complications. However, Mr Murray, of Cardiff Street on  Walney , woke up in extreme agony and it was only two days later that he was rushed back into theatre where a surgeon discovered his testicle had gone black and gangrenous. WHISTLE-BLOWER ASKS TO BE PART OF INVESTIGATION

TRUST REVEALS TERMS OF REFERENCE FOR RCS REVIEW In October 2015 the University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust invited a service review of the trust’s urology surgical service by the Royal College of Surgeons (RCS). This invitation was to review and analyse the quality and safety of the service after the avoidable death of Peter Read from Morecambe at the Royal Lancaster Infirmary. In 2015 Mr Read died after developing urosepsis caused by ‘missed opportunities to change his ureteric stent’, a coroner later ruled. Mr Read was treated by Ashutosh Jain, the same consultant who, in 2011, was involved in the care of Irene Erhart from  Walney  along with Kavinder Madhra. A coroner said the failings of Mr Jain and fellow urological consultant Muhammad Naseem in not replacing a stent contributed to Mr Read’s death. The RCS review took place in January 2016 which made several recommendations for the trust. In July of this year a number of concerns ...
